Certificate Programs

The School of Social Sciences offers many certificates for all undergraduates interested in supplementing their education. The knowledge and skills gained through these certificates can positively influence students looking to enhance their professional profile in many different fields ranging from business, education, social work and psychology, to medicine and public health. Each certificate will outline courses to complete and other requirements. See the list below for available certificates:

  • American Sign Language

    Certificate in American Sign Language: Designed for students seeking expertise in the linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions of American Sign Language (ASL) and the Deaf community. Courses offer training in the fundamental aspects of ASL structure and vocabulary, while also exploring the social and cultural issues affecting the Deaf community. This program prepares students to engage effectively with the Deaf community and to understand the broader cultural context of ASL.

  • Business, Economics and Organization

    The certificate recognizes special expertise in the social forces shaping the workplace, organizational structures and the economy. This certificate program may prepare students for careers in business development, economic policy, and organizational management. You are required to complete FOUR of the following courses with a grade of C or better. Each course may be used for one certificate only.

  • Chicano Latino Community in a Global Context

    This certificate recognizes focuses on the study of globalization, transnationalism, and immigration and their impact on the Chicano and Latino community.

  • Cultural Competency

    The School of Social Sciences offers a Cultural Competency certificate for all undergraduates interested in supplementing their education with cultural awareness, knowledge, and skills. Requiring a minimum of five courses, the certification facilitates the study of cultural knowledge and diversity, inequalities and advocacy, cultural gaps, and culturally effective leadership. The knowledge and skills gained through the required curriculum is valuable for all professions in varying fields of service (ranging from business, education, social work, psychology, to medicine and public health).

  • Diversity & Inequality

    This certificate recognizes special expertise in the racial, ethnic, gender, age and sexual orientation diversity of communities and workplaces. It places special emphasis on how these population categories are associated with inequality and social injustice. This certificate program may prepare students for careers in diversity management, law, human resources, and social policy. You are required to complete FOUR courses with a grade of C or better. Each course may be used for one certificate only.

  • Global & International Sociolgy

    This certificate recognizes intensive study of significant global issues and world regions undergoing rapid social change. The certificate may prepare students for careers in global affairs, international organizations, international business, and law. You are required to complete FOUR courses with a grade of C or better. Each course may be used for one certificate only.

  • History and Culture

    The certificate recognizes special expertise in the history and culture of Chicano and Latino communities with special emphasis on gender roles and sexuality.

  • Labor Studies

    The certificate takes a broader approach to labor, focusing on the individual and less on the economy. It aims to help prepare the next generation of labor organizers. Courses selected for the certificate focus on labor history, collective bargaining, labor laws, policies, and the social, cultural, and political life of workers.

  • Research on International Migration

    The Certificate in Research on International Migration takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying international migration, a field of study that involves faculty across disciplines at UCI. Courses selected for the certificate foreground immigration as a sustained focus of inquiry and examine immigration as an analytical concept and a process that affects individuals, families, communities, the nation and the world. These courses examine many dimensions of immigration, including the causes of immigration and its consequences. UCI is a national leader in immigration studies. Its departments and faculty offer an exceptionally wide variety of courses in immigration.

  • Social Determinants of Health in Latino Communities

    This certificate recognizes special expertise in the health and medical fields with special emphasis on cultural and structural competency with diverse Latino/a communities.

  • Social Policy and Issues

    This certificate focuses on issues and policies affecting the Chicano and Latino community and its access to and participation in social institutions.

  • Social Problems & Public Policy

    This certificate recognizes special expertise relevant to developing, implementing, and evaluating programs in education, health care, social work, personnel, law enforcement, and public administration. This certificate program may prepare students for careers in social services and public administration. You are required to complete FOUR courses with a grade of C or better. Each course may be used for one certificate only.

  • Veterans Studies

    Since 2019, UCI’s School of Social Sciences has offered an undergraduate multidisciplinary Veterans Studies Certificate Program that critically analyzes the diversity and complexity of veterans’ experiences, past and present. It is designed to provide veteran and non-veteran students with a deeper understanding of veterans’ issues and experiences, and to prepare students for careers working with veterans. This program is one of five such programs in the nation, and first to be offered by a California university.
