    Available beginning Week 1 each quarter.

    Social Sciences Live Chat is an online live chat service available for CURRENT UCI STUDENTS to ask general advising related questions. For quick questions requiring a more immediate response, chat is the best option. You will need to provide your full name and UCI ID number to communicate with a Social Sciences' Academic Advisor. Advisors are available to answer general questions related to the following:

    • Policies and Procedures
    • Degree Requirements for Social Sciences Majors
    • Change of Major Requirements for Social Sciences Majors
    • Prerequisite Information/Prerequisite Clearance
    • Enrollment Issues
    • Excess Unit Request
    • Course Offering Information

    Examples of questions that are best for chat:

    • Can I take this course as Pass/No Pass?
    • When is the deadline to drop a class?
    • Why can't I add this class?


    Live Chat is intended for questions that can be answered quickly. Questions/advisement requiring more time should be emailed to NOTE: Live Chat is NOT intended to answer questions related to:

    • Fall courses and/or transcript evaluations for prospective students (these topics will be covered during summer orientation and academic advising)
    • Career Counseling
    • Admissions Counseling
    • Transcript Evaluation
    • Graduation Checks

    • Personal/Crisis/Mental Health Counseling

    Live Chat is not available for Personal/Crisis/Mental Health Counseling. UC Irvine students in need of these services should contact the UCI Counseling Center directly:

    Please Note: The academic advisor reserves the right to end a chat for reasons included (but not limited to) those listed below:

    • Asking questions related to those listed in the "NOT" section above, however, we will provide referrals to correct campus resources, if necessary.
    • Using chat multiple times in one day. Instead, consider collecting your thoughts and questions and emailing ONE academic advisor.
    • Asking for exceptions to policies regarding prerequisites, excess units, etc. We will not be making any exceptions to policies.
    • Refusing to provide your own UCI ID Number and accurate information.

    If you have just a few straightforward questions for an advisor, email is a great way to get the information you need!

    You can expect a response from an advisor within 48 business hours. However, this may be delayed during busier times in the quarter. Thank you for your patience.

    Examples of questions that can be asked via email:

    • What do you think about this tentative course schedule?
    • Can you help me decide how many units I should take?
    • How many courses do I have remaining for my major?
    • Have you received my IGETC? 

    Please email our office at OR email ONE academic advisor. Emails that seem to be sent to multiple advisors will be deleted.

    Please be sure to include all relevant information in your email and state your question(s) as clearly and concisely as possible to allow for an accurate and thorough response.

    Email Tips:

    • Always include your full name and UCI ID number in your email.
    • Use your UCI email address (for all UCI correspondence). To protect your privacy, many UCI offices (including us!) will only respond to messages from UCI email accounts.
    • Be clear and concise. Try to keep your email messages brief. 
    • Be professional. Treat emails as a formal communication - do not use text messaging abbreviations, slang, etc.
    • Please only email ONE advisor in our office. Also, if you have multiple questions, collect your thoughts and write one email, instead of multiple emails.
    • Be patient and flexible. We will respond as soon as we can to your email. Please keep in mind that some advising issues may require more time to be resolved.

    Available Week 1 through 10.

    To add yourself to the PAA drop-ins queue during scheduled hours, which will place you in a virtual line to meet with a PAA, please proceed with the following steps:

    1. Please fill out the PAA Drop-In Advising sign-up form Click Here
      NOTE: This form is only available during scheduled hours and will not accept responses outside of these hours (see weekly schedule above).
    2. Once the form is completed, you will be provided with the Zoom link to join the waiting room. It is best to join the Zoom waiting room as soon as you can, so you can keep your place in the virtual line.
    3. While you wait to speak with a PAA, make sure your name on your UCI Zoom account matches your full name (first and last name) listed on your UCI student record.
    4. When it is your turn, an advisor will allow you into the main Zoom room (please have your camera on) and we will assist you.


    Be advised that there will be increased wait times during the enrollment period. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Students will be seen one-on-one on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    Phone calls allow you to speak with a School of Social Sciences academic advisor over the phone for general advising questions, scheduling issues, degree requirements, referrals, questions regarding school policies and procedures, and any "quick" questions you may have.

    Availability is during office hours throughout the quarter. You may call our office at 949-824-6803 between the hours of 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm.

    If you are unable to reach our office when you call, please leave a message with your full name, UCI ID number, call back phone number, and reason for calling and we will return messages in the order they are received. Please speak clearly and slowly when leaving your message and include all information above. We may not be able to call you back if you provide an incomplete message. 

    Be advised that there will be increased wait times at the beginning of the quarter, as well as during the enrollment period. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Students are responded to on a first-call, first-serve basis.

    Appointments start in Week 2 each quarter. We begin accepting appointment requests on Thursday of the previous week. We do not make appointments more than one week in advance.

    20-minute scheduled appointments are intended for students with lengthier, more complex questions or scheduling issues that require more time with a full-time academic advisor than live chat or phone calls will allow. Same day appointments are NOT available.

    Please note appointments are only for students majoring in the School of Social Sciences. If you are interested in changing to or adding a major in Social Sciences, you can fill out a Change of Major Progress Request or email our Peer Academic Advisors at with your questions. Please view the Change of Major Requirements.

    If your request is for a degree/progress check, no appointment is needed! You can submit a Degree Check Request and an advisor will email you a PDF of your progress via email within 4-7 business days.

    Appointments are only available Monday through Friday 9:00am-11:00am and 1:30pm-3:30pm during Weeks 2-10 each quarter.
