    Available beginning Week 1 each quarter.

    Social Sciences Live Chat is an online live chat service available for CURRENT UCI STUDENTS to ask general advising related questions. For quick questions requiring a more immediate response, chat is the best option. You will need to provide your full name and UCI ID number to communicate with a Social Sciences' Academic Advisor. Advisors are available to answer general questions related to the following:

    • Policies and Procedures
    • Degree Requirements for Social Sciences Majors
    • Change of Major Requirements for Social Sciences Majors
    • Prerequisite Information/Prerequisite Clearance
    • Enrollment Issues
    • Excess Unit Request
    • Course Offering Information

    Examples of questions that are best for chat:

    • Can I take this course as Pass/No Pass?
    • When is the deadline to drop a class?
    • Why can't I add this class?

    WeChat is an option for students who would like to receive advising in Chinese.

    We have Chinese speaking academic advisors, if you would like to receive advising in Chinese, you can: 
    1) Email socscipaa@uci.edu and indicate "Question for Chinese Academic Advisor" on the subject line, or
    2) Contact us in WeChat. If you still haven't added us on WeChat, please click here to fill out your info and we will send you the WeChat friend request. 
    **Note: You must log in to your UCI email to access and fill out our WeChat contact form!

    When using WeChat, make sure to consider the following:

    • Our WeChat response time is 1-3 working days, we do not respond on weekends and holidays
    • Please be patient for a response, do not contact us in multiple ways (such as email, phone) for the same questions, or we will be less efficient in responding.
    • Students must ask the questions for themselves, not for their friends. Some replies only apply to the particular student.  
    • We only advise on academics, please contact the corresponding office for other affairs. For example, visa related questions should be referred to the International Center.
    • Please never share your password with anyone else! Campus staff will never ask for your password!

    If you have just a few straightforward questions for an advisor, email is a great way to get the information you need!

    You can expect a response from an advisor within 48 business hours. However, this may be delayed during busier times in the quarter. Thank you for your patience.

    Examples of questions that can be asked via email:

    • What do you think about this tentative course schedule?
    • Can you help me decide how many units I should take?
    • How many courses do I have remaining for my major?
    • Have you received my IGETC? 

    Please email our office at socsci@uci.edu OR email ONE academic advisor. Emails that seem to be sent to multiple advisors will be deleted.

    Please be sure to include all relevant information in your email and state your question(s) as clearly and concisely as possible to allow for an accurate and thorough response.

    Email Tips:

    • Always include your full name and UCI ID number in your email.
    • Use your UCI email address (for all UCI correspondence). To protect your privacy, many UCI offices (including us!) will only respond to messages from UCI email accounts.
    • Be clear and concise. Try to keep your email messages brief. 
    • Be professional. Treat emails as a formal communication - do not use text messaging abbreviations, slang, etc.
    • Please only email ONE advisor in our office. Also, if you have multiple questions, collect your thoughts and write one email, instead of multiple emails.
    • Be patient and flexible. We will respond as soon as we can to your email. Please keep in mind that some advising issues may require more time to be resolved.

    Our PAAs are available for any questions you may have about Social Sciences' policies, majors/minors, change of major, general education, degree requirements, course scheduling, as well as providing informative workshops, and much more!     **Keep in mind that you must be logged into your UCI Google/Gmail account to access the sign-up form and also logged into your UCI Zoom account in order to access the Zoom waiting room.**

    To add yourself to the PAA drop-ins queue during scheduled hours, which will place you in a virtual line to meet with a PAA, please proceed with the following steps:

    1. Please fill out the PAA Drop-In Advising sign-up form Click Here NOTE: This form is only available during scheduled hours and will not accept responses outside of these hours (see weekly schedule above).
    2. Once the form is completed, you will be provided with the Zoom link to join the waiting room. It is best to join the Zoom waiting room as soon as you can, so you can keep your place in the virtual line.
    3. While you wait to speak with a PAA, make sure your name on your UCI Zoom account matches your full name (first and last name) listed on your UCI student record.
    4. When it is your turn, an advisor will allow you into the main Zoom room (please have your camera on) and we will assist you.
    5. Be advised that there will be increased wait times during the enrollment period. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Students will be seen one-on-one on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    Appointments are available beginning Week 2 each quarter and are available Monday through Friday from 9:00am-11:00am and 1:30pm-3:30pm.

    20 minute scheduled appointments are intended for students with lengthier, more complex questions or scheduling issues that require more time with an advisor than live chat, emails or drop-ins will allow. You do not need an appointment for the following: course petitions/substitutions, DegreeWorks updates, graduation application changes, letter requests, prerequisite clearance, excess units, etc. Please refer to our FORMS page.

    PLEASE NOTE: For information regarding post-graduate plans, graduate school, internships, and career advising, please select "Social Sciences Academic Resource Center (SSARC)," which is the perfect resource to assist you! You can also visit their website: https://www.ssarc.socsci.uci.edu/

    For Spring Quarter 2022, appointments are only available through Week 9. Once the schedule is full, you will no longer be able to make appointments.

    Our office is offering same-day advising services of PAA Drop-Ins and Live Chat throughout Week 10 and that is the best way to meet with an advisor. The weekly schedule will be updated on Friday afternoon of Week 9. If you have a more complicated question or issue and would like to request an appointment, you can email the academic advisor you have been working with directly with your full name, UCI ID number, reason for the appointment and specific days and times during Week 10 that you are hoping to have the appointment. All advising offered in Week 10 is REMOTE only.
